Professor Martin Llewelyn
Professor of Infectious Diseases, Brighton & Sussex Medical School
Prof Llewelyn has worked in the NHS for >30 years as a doctor and researcher. His specific focus is antimicrobial stewardship and in particular challenging the concept of one-size-fits all antibiotic treatment “courses”.He came to Sussex in 2004 and led the development of a new Regional Specialist Infectious Diseases Service.From 2019-2021 he served as president of the British Infection Association and from 2020-2024 chaired the RCP Joint Specialist Committee on Infectious Diseases.Since 2022 he has been Director of Research at University Hospitals Sussex. In 2025 he led a successful bid to NIHR to establish a Sussex Commercial Research Delivery Centre.Martin continues to work as an NHS consultant and researcher. He is co-chief investigator for the DURATION trial and the ARK-Hospital research programme.
